Smile and say "cheese" as Shutter materializes on DVD and Blu-ray this July 15th. |
| The past resurfaces to haunt the living. Fox Home Entertainment will resurrect its 2008 film Shutter on DVD and Blu-ray this July. From the Executive Producers of The Ring and The Grudge, Shutter follows newlywed couple Ben (Joshua Jackson of Dawson's Creek) and Jane (Rachael Taylor of Transformers), in Japan for Ben's latest photography assignment. When strange images of a young girl begin to show in their photos, Jane investigates. These inexplicable spirit images may connect to Ben's past. As the mystery unfolds, horrifying things begin to happen. Will the couple escape the spirit's relentless efforts to make their lives a living nightmare? The plot has its roots in real-life stories. People have claimed to have captured images of spirits in their photos since the late 1800s. Physicist Sir William Crookes and Sherlock Holmes author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle both believed in the paranormal. In response to the many skeptics of spirit photography, Doyle wrote the book The Case for Spirit Photography. Famed illusionist Harry Houdini also explored the possibility of a paranormal realm, hoping to get in touch with his late mother. People have always hoped for life after death and there have always been those who have wanted to contact their deceased loved ones. At the same time, the thought of ghosts and spirits brings a chill to many people's spines. Shutter aims to chill its audience. In an interview with Shock Till You Drop, Jackson called the film an Alfred Hitchcock-type thriller. "It's tension through storytelling where it just builds and builds and builds and builds." According to IMDB following a trend of recent American J-horror (Japanese) remakes, Director Masayuki Ochiai reshapes the 2004 Thai film of the same name. "He has his own sort of interpretation of it," Jackson said. "It's still J-horror... but it's not the same blues and grays equals scary." Taylor, who joined the cast with her love of the original film in mind, told Shock Till You Drop "the bones of the story were really good exploring themes of revenge, deceit, trust, the idea of a secret in a relationship." "If a skeleton of a good human drama is underneath all the whiz-bang supernatural ghost stuff then it'll work," she told Web Wombat. She said her character changes throughout the movie from a "fairly naïve fairly-boring girl" to a woman with "a very strong moral conclusion about herself, and what she can and can't accept in a relationship." The DVD and Blu-ray versions of Shutter have a few skeletons of their own. Fox will release a rated DVD version, an unrated DVD version, a theatrical-rated flipper disc version, and a Blu-ray disc version on July 15.
