How can something so inherently wrong be so right? The first two seasons of Sealab 2021 were defining for Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim block. Along with Space Ghost: Coast to Coast, it was something fresh and new for the 21-to-24 in all of us. Several other shows came around in the same atmosphere and style of absurd humor, but none have been as provoking as Sealab 2021. And now, the creators have brought us something that pushes the limits of humor to the very edge.
Frisky Dingo is a true staple of what Adult Swim is, was, and should always be. It’s not just about dubbed, hyper-popular anime shows or reruns of Futurama and Family Guy. This is the kind of platform that people who watch Adult Swim are willing to stand on. These shows do more in fifteen minutes what an entire season of some lesser shows attempt in the ways of witty, intelligent, and in some cases, tongue-in-cheek dialogue. A better testament to “quality versus quantity” would be difficult to find.
It’s no question that the release of this DVD is directly targeted toward the fans, of which I stand counted. The comedic timing of a series akin to Frisky Dingo is somewhat of a mystery. No doubt, the timing works perfectly and cannot be easily duplicated. Simply put, the Frisky Dingo team just have it. It’s the kind of show that cannot be forced into production. Otherwise, it will all come off as an attempt to be funny on purpose. Guess where that ends up, nine-point-nine times out of ten? Since it’s a relaxed, non-manufactured brand of humor, there can truly be no proven imitation. The danger comes in setting the bar that must be met. Future seasons may prove disastrous, but it is a risk worth taking.
With the resolution of the writer’s strike and the hopes that a third season will emerge, this is a definite fan buy. Fans should do themselves a huge favor by purchasing the first season and subsequently clear out some TiVo space. For those who have yet to witness the Frisky Dingo phenomenon, this makes for a perfectly convenient introduction. You’re still getting two plus hours of quality Adult Swim programming any way you look at it. Perhaps you still CAN go back to Arizona?
