It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is an incredibly funny, though sometimes also crude, television series chronicling the lives of five friends (some related, some not) who work together in a pub in Philadelphia. The premise of the show is simple enough, but these seemingly ordinary people find tons of ways in each episode to prove that they are anything but regular people. This show takes a special kind of fan to follow it, and once someone starts watching, it’s a guarantee that they’ll be hooked.
The season 3 box set, which contains 15 episodes on 3 disks, also has an abundance of special features to go with it. The features are all presented on the third disk of the set.
“Sunny Side Up Part 2” is a video feature that opens up the behind-the-scenes to the show, presented as always in the most comical way possible. This feature runs for just over 6 minutes and presents the cast, the directors, the producer, the writers and even some of the crew members, all discussing their thoughts on the show and on season 3. Every second of this is hilarious, as is fitting to the show!
The second feature, “Meet the McPoyles,” is a hilarious video showing a behind-the-scenes about being cast as a “McPoyle” on the show. Entirely overdone and funny beyond a traditional interview, this feature is different from many shown on traditional television shows. Since Always Sunny is a show not like many others, it only makes sense that the bonus features reflect that. It takes really knowing the show to “get” this feature, but a thorough watching of season 3 should be enough. True fans will love it!
The next feature, “Dancing Guy,” deserves to be kept a surprise for viewers. The video would be ruined if it had any commentary on it at all. This video lasts for 6 minutes.
The favorite feature of television shows, the blooper reel, is a hilarious collection of jokes for Always Sunny. Some of their “bloopers” are real, but many are staged. This set chooses to call theirs a “gag reel,” probably because most of the featured scenes are staged jokes the cast members make against each other. As always, the “gag reel” gives fans a lot of insight into the dynamics between the cast members on set. They really have a great time working together. The gag reel lasts for 6 minutes.
The last feature, “Season 3 TV Spots,” is a sample of the ads the show presented for season 3 airings on the FX Network.
This box set is a fantastic example of the great work on this show from the past television season. Anyone who has even seen one episode and laughed is guaranteed to enjoy every moment in this set. The bonus features are excellent examples of what the show stands for, its hilarity and nonsensical humor. Every fan should own this.
