In 2000, a show was launched that struck fear in the hearts of parents but despite that- or perhaps because of it- became a sensation among teenage boys everywhere. That show was Jackass. It was a show that revolved around every boy's dream: getting together with a group of friends and doing stupid stuff. Starring Bam Margera, Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, and their friends, and with frequent guest stars such as Bam's family and sports stars like Tony Hawk and Mat Hoffman, Jackass was a show that shocked, appalled, and entertained all at the same time. After the show came a movie, a second movie four years after the show ended in 2006, and now we have half a movie.
Jackass 2.5 is a collection of footage that wasn't used in the second movie, as well as interviews with the cast and crew about the different stunts. It is done in a more documentary style, where they will talk about a stunt and show the making of the stunt, and mix that with actually showing the stunt. Surprisingly, it works incredibly well- seeing the behind the scenes stuff adds a lot to the stunts, as it helps the viewer find a new-found appreciation for how much pain and misery the Jackass crew goes through for our pleasure. What is cool about this DVD is that it shows how sometimes, the Jackass crew's great ideas don't turn out so well. Some of the stunts in this movie were the ones that got cut from the second because they were complete failures. These so-called failures were almost more fun to watch than the stunts that did work.
To go into too much detail about the stunts would ruin the fun of finding out what they do for yourself, but suffice it to say that there is the normal large amounts of pain, bodily fluids, and sheer craziness that we have come to expect from the Jackass gang. There are sea clamps, porta-potties, bottle rockets, snakes, mini motorcycles, rubber bullets, a bed of rusty nails, alligators, and paintball guns. Jackass 2.5 has some guest stars as well, including Mike Judge, Three 6 Mafia, and Mat Hoffman, Even this cut material is up to the usual high standard that the Jackass crew sets, so those who love Jackass will not be disappointed.
The audio and video quality on the disc are good. Nothing spectacular- Jackass is no big summer blockbuster- but it is well done. Dialogue is clear, and every scream, grunt of pain, thwack, and vomit comes across clearly.
In terms of extras, Jackass 2.5 goes the extra mile. The two big draws are 45 minutes of never before seen footage and a behind-the-scenes feature. The extra footage is excellent, filled with more of the Jackass craziness, and the behind-the-scenes stuff is more than just fluff, actually providing some insight into how Jackass is actually made. While those two are the main draws, there is also a photo gallery and a making of the game, as well. While the movie is a bit short at only 64 minutes, the extra footage and behind the scenes feature do a lot to provide some more value to the disc.
If you are a fan of Jackass, buy this. You will not be disappointed. If you like Jackass, at least give it a rent- it is absolutely, painfully hilarious. This is more of the Jackass we all know and love, and while it is not gonna win any awards, it most definitely succeeds at entertaining.
