In the pantheon of great television family comedies, Home
Improvement has cemented its place as one of the funniest
of all time. Based on the stand up comedy of Tim Allen's
"Men are Pigs" routine, Home Improvement has stood the test
of time, and Allen has literally grunted his way into
television history. The fourth season of Home Improvement
showcases how well written the series was, and is packaged
nicely in this three disc set.
As fans of the series will remember, Home Improvement
follows the exploits of Tim "The Toolman" Taylor (Allen) as
a husband, father of three young boys, and host of a cable
tool show. Tim Taylor continuously finds himself in one
hilarious predicament after another either with his hosting
duties or with his wife. Though the Tim Taylor character
prides himself on being a man's man, the audience gets to
see him as a loving father and good friend.
The Complete Fourth Season set contains three discs with
all 26 episodes. Every episode follows the same routine of
Tim usually screwing something up, going to his neighbor
for advice, messing the advice up, but still somehow fixing
whatever problem he originally created, but the plotlines
due fluctuate. Within the fourth season we see Tim's wife,
Jill, (Patricia Richardson) go back to college, Tim's best
friend Al ( Richard Karn) become one of Detroit's most
eligible bachelors, and Tim's sage like neighbor, Wilson,
(Earl Hindman) go on his first date in twenty years. This
season also contains the popular holiday episode "'Twas The
Nightmare Before Christmas" in which Tim tries to win the
neighborhood house decorating contest.
The downside as with most television series season DVD's is
the limited special features. The only extra this set
contains is a blooper real with never before seen footage.
There is really nothing special about it, and the miscues
shown as part of the reel look like they were added on
rather hurriedly. I believe some cast and crew interviews
would have been a better choice.
Home Improvement is an Emmy Award winning comedy series
that has found its own niche on the list of great
television family comedies. With excellent writing and a
superb cast the show was funny, entertaining, and gave the
viewers a look at a family that could just as easily have
been your own neighbors. The fourth season of this
remarkable series is packaged nicely in this three disc
set. This is an absolute must have for any fan of the
series, and the shows are funny enough even those that
never followed the series would still be entertained by
them. Home Improvement The Complete Fourth Season three
disc set, would be a welcome addition to the collection of
any fan of family comedy.
