Are there truly No More Heroes?

Ubisoft’s upcoming title from some of the minds behind Killer 7
Set in the quaint township of Santa Destroy, Otaku turned assassin Travis Touchdown finds himself in an unusual predicament, namely the number 11 spot in the listings for the United Assassin’s Association. What’s a guy to do except the only logical thing for this kind of mindset: aim for Number One and stay there, by any means necessary.

Goichi Suda, more commonly known as SUDA51 in the industry, has worked on projects that have reached enormous fame in Japan, such as Super Fire Professional Wrestling III Final Bout, :: breath ::, Moonlight Syndrome, and the more-recognized by North American audiences Killer 7, which was by many accounts a very different, undoubetly more violent, game than most are accustomed to.

No doubt, fans of Killer 7 will be the first in line to snag up this title for the Wii. Wii remote controls are sure to be, once again, utilized in the most efficient ways possible for the title at hand. There is no secret that third-party software for the Wii has been hit or miss since its inception, but this surely aims to be a title that will break the generational curse that has oft plagued Nintendo throughout its days of console gaming.

Obviously appealing to the inner geek desire to achieve greatness, which seems to be the draw of many computer games, is No More Heroes just another unique game that will stand by itself while other titles rise and fall? Is this meant to be some kind of social commentary on our, or another culture’s, current state? Is this just another jaunt into the ever-familiar sex, drugs, and ultra-violence? I would certainly hope that it is not the latter, for there are enough games to fill that slot already, regardless of perceived demand.

At least four more updates are scheduled for the game’s official website. So far, there is already a collection element announced in the game, involving Travis Touchdown’s love for professional wrestling, anime and clothes. Customize your wardrobe while searching for trading cards of the masks of your favorite professional wrestlers. Also, Travis enjoys treasure hunting, not afraid to use his Beam Katanas to dig up replica robots from his favorite anime series, “Bizarre Jelly.”

Taking a look at the website, it is easy to see that some voices out there will easily pass this off as a Grand Theft Auto clone with the appropriate bells and whistles thrown in to make it “unique.” Sadly, only the release of the game will either silence or edify these accusations, if indeed they will be made. In the meantime, visit the website regularly during the months of January and February for scheduled updates.
