Free MMOs litter the virtual landscape. And yes, I understand that there is an eventual want to actually invest some cash into the game in order to get some unique gear. But, whenever the free game is little more than a giant advertisement, no amount of novelty or practicality can save it. Such is the case with BOTS, an Acclaim production.

No part of being a robot designed to beat up other robots gets old, period. Players are allowed to currently pick from one of three designs in order to wreak mechanical mayhem. Controls are simple enough, and the tutorial mission will familiarize you with almost everything you need to know during the beating time. Spending time in various missions will earn you experience and in-game credit in order to get parts and abilities. From there, it’s grind and go. There are plenty of stages that you will play over and over simply to gain more levels and money. Granted, there is plenty of infinite Web space to expand upon this little boat ride.

There is nothing to either applaud or condemn with BOTS graphical buffet. Not the same can be said with the music. They’ve got hip tracks, granted. It’s just more “hip” and less “track”. Do yourself a favor and queue up an .m3u list of bolt-busting tunes before attempting to play for a long time. Speaking of playing for a long time, the multiplayer aspect will guarantee many mindless hours burned. No lack of company here, folks. Ruckus is always better when it’s shared, and BOTS is a top-quality toybox in that regard.

I understand that those who invest will get an edge. There’s no avoiding that, no matter how much I complain. But, couple the LACK of “free” store stock with the incredibly slow rate of currency and experience gain, and people that are only wishing to kill some time might as well go home. Even the most skillful BOTS player in existence that is armed with the best of free gear will fall to any random noob with a pocket full of shells. It wouldn’t be so bad if most of the gear and maneuvers were not cash only. It would have been nice to see an option of either cash or points. Until Acclaim starts to make an actual sense of accomplishment for their free players, they might as well stop pitching this as a free game.

My complaints could be viewed as self-motivated, even greed driven in some cases. Maybe that’s true. But, check out BOTS for yourself and see that your rate of return is considerably lower than your initial investment. Your combat edge comes in maneuvers that you have to purchase with in-game currency or cold hard cash. That’s great, except the maneuvers only last for so many full games before you have to buy them again. Yes, you get about 100 games a pop, but only the most helpful maneuvers can be bought with cash and nothing else. If you’re not in for the long haul, it’s best leave the android arena with your wallet in tact.
