Manufacturer Storyline

Welcome to Destination Far Cry. You are Jack Carver, running your own boat charter business in beautiful Micronesia. With a past best left behind you, you'll be focusing on your present assignment: escorting an ambitious journalist named Valerie Cortez to the island of Cabatu. It seems like a piece of cake, but you'll soon learn: paradise can be hell.

Review

Well fans I know it's a little late, but I just got a hold of Far Cry by UBI Soft. Hold onto your hats because this game is simply awesome. Finally, a game that has been worth the wait!! We'll start with the story - a mariner named Jack Carver is being paid a lot of money to take a reporter to a paradise island. Upon reaching the island his ship comes under mortar attack and is destroyed while the beautiful reporter seems to be missing. Let the adventure begin.

Jack struggles through the jungle, gets a gun and finds an insider who fills him in on what is truly happening on the island. This forces Jack to make a stand and hopefully destroy the mercenaries and what sounds like something that may not be human. Similar to other games like Soldier of Fortune and Half Life, you pick up ammo and weapons along your trecherous journey. Your cache of weapons is impressive and includes a .357 mag., a great assortment of assault weapons, rocket launcher, and my personal favorite the jackhammer shotgun. This ,however, is where all similarities end.

Along your path you will get to commandeer a number of vehicles including a Humvee, dune buggy, a very large truck and a patrol boat equipped with enough fire power to reek serious havoc. Stay alert because there always seems to be someone behind you or hiding in the brush. The mercineries seem to hear every move you make, which causes you to think a little more before rustling the palm leaves. The storyline fits extremely well with all the action and actually has a few suprises just when you think it's the end.

The graphics in this game are to say the least superb. Renderings are so smooth that you will start to believe that you are actually there. Every detail of the terrain, along with waves beating against the shore, is exquisite. All the characters that are encountered move fluidly, without any herky-jerky type motion. The movement controls are all similar to others allowing for an easy transition. Everything about this game is incredible. Although my trigger finger is rusty, I ventured online into a session that was totally intense to say the least. In multiplayer mode, you can select a team and character class. The character class is used in attack mode and allows you to be Grunt (toughest) Sniper (sniper rifle) and Support (used for building and repairing). Other features include building maps and reconstructing game levels on the run. You can also fly a glider and swim under water.

Final Thoughts

I rate this game 3.5 stars overall for action, graphics, and storyline. Get your copy today so you can start the adventure.

Before you purchase your copy, be sure to check the pc requirements. This game likes power on all levels including, processor and video card. I tested on a Dell 8300 with a Pentium 4 Processor at 3GHz, 1GB dual channel DDR SDRAM, 16x DVD-ROM drive and a128mb ATI RADEON 9800 Pro. The game ships with Directx 9.0b on disk, along with Dolby Digital surround support.
