When I got my new package from Static Multimedia, I was beyond ecstatic, considering that school has just started and the only thing I’ve been getting in the mail is bills, which always means that I have to work more and more. Fun fun. Ah well, let me tell you of the game that I reviewed known as Rhem 3, which is loadable on both PCs and Macs. Since I have yet to do a Macintosh computer game review, I will load this on my PowerBook and see how it runs.
…
Wow, it loaded pretty fast! That’s kind of cool.
This game doesn’t require many resources to run, so if you have a rather slow or older Macintosh you may be able to run this with almighty ease. As I was playing this, I checked out the two previous installments, and they were pretty fun. It is a great compliment to its predecessors. And, if you are wondering, this game is essentially another MYST clone, which is not necessarily bad. It’s simply the only frame of reference that comes to mind.
Controls on this game were kind of choppy, but that was to be expected from a point and click adventure game. If your mouse (or mouse pad, in my case) works, then you are in great shape. The scenery is extremely well pieced: matching textures, no obvious flaws, nothing that would make one pause and go “Hmm.” Even up-close shots don’t lose quality. It’s been a while since I’ve had a game that I just genuinely like to look at.
And finally the music…lacking to say the least. Kind of repetitive; definitely not the type of soundtrack that I would throw in the Sentra and rock out to. Possibly because it would make me want to click my way through hallways, slide across the floors and ride railcars from building to building in search of treasure, and that treasure, unlike in the game, would be knowledge. Anyway, the music is monotonous but not aggravating. In all honesty, it gets the job done.
Generally, I find myself tapped out on these types of games, but if you do happen to like this particular genre, then Rhem 3 is a grand ole time. It covers everything a modern adventurer would want: puzzles, treasure, and rail car rides. What in the hell else in life could you want? I can’t think of anything else. And if you are in that boat, then this is the game for you. But if you are not one for that type of adventure, then steer far away from this game and go play something that doesn’t require point-and-click navigation or puzzle-solving.
