Imagine this…
Guns blazing, the Messerschmitt Bf-109 screams through the clouds toward you. Instinctively, you barrel-roll out of the way, hot lead missing your Spitfire by millimeters. You bank right, flank him and open fire. The enemy plane falls like a comet, but then you spy the Stuka bearing down on you. You pull up to loop over your attacker, but the enemy is closing fast! This is now possible as you take to the air and unleash complex acrobatic flight tricks with a simple flick of the Wii Remote
In WWII Aces you can get behind the guns of twelve legendary planes like the Spitfire, Ju-87 Stuka, Mosquito and He-111. Fly for the RAF Soviet Air Force, or even the Luftwaffe. You can also tackle missions alone or fly with a friend. Or, go head-to-head in competitive split-screen multiplayer. Roll, loop, dodge and shoot like an ace with three distinct control schemes. Ah, but here is our first problem, one of the few with the game. The first twenty minutes of game play involves changing your control scheme, trying to find one that actually works.
Now one of the great points of the game is you can fly in over seventy historical WWII missions, including strategic bombing, paratrooper drops, frantic dogfights, and more. Let me add that these missions are not just simple load the missions follow the waypoints and ta-da mission successful. There is depth and realism in the missions that add a lot to the game. Campaign mode is played like any other flight simulation. You’re given a mission and then go and complete it. I did enjoy the campaign mode more with another player.
I got to try the multiplayer with my father who is a fan of pilot games and while after awhile he was able to get a hold of the controls we both agreed the motion controls are just too jumpy and the graphics were seen ten years ago in other flight simulators. We played for about an hour before I put the remote down. Overall, WWII Aces is just another unimpressive reenactment game. One day they will get the flight system down on the Wii but until that day the shelves will have games like these taking up space.
