Combining equal parts punk aggression and metallic complexity |
| The name Dredg may have come from the English word dredge, which means to unearth, widen/deepen a river or channel. If you asked them about it, they would say it was so long ago that they don’t remember why they named themselves Dredge, nor do they like it anymore. Their latest, The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion, was released June 9 on their own Ohlone Recordings through Warner Music Group's Independent Label Group. Receiving some good air play overseas, being chosen XBOX Live Emerging Artist Of The Month for June, and garnishing a 3.5 star review here on Static, this could one of their best efforts to date. Guitarist Mark Engles sits down to give some insight. What do you think separates Dredg from other bands? We've been playing together since we were 13 or 14 years old and we are still doing it at 30+. Why is your new album called The Pariah, The Parrot and The Delusion? Pariah= an outcast, especially religious. Parrot= a follower, one who goes with the flock. Delusion= what a lot of humans suffer from. What was the writing process like for this album? Long...We wrote a lot of songs...more than ever. What is your favorite track off the new album? I really like "Pariah, Light Switch, and Down to the Cellar" Tell us about the artwork for your albums. Our friend Rohner Segnitz has done almost every one of our records. He did the new one for us and we couldn't be happier. How is it touring overseas versus the US? Which do you like better? We enjoy touring in Europe a lot. There is much more respect for rock musicians over here (I'm in Bochum, Germany as I answer this). Not to mention we do much better in places like Germany. How did you hook up with XBox? Is everyone in the band big gamers? I'm not quite sure how we hooked up with XBox, I'll give my managers credit for that. None of us are huge gamers. What’s in your I-Pod these days? Me Without You- 'It's All Crazy, It's All False, It's All a Dream' What does the future hold for Dredg? Tour, tour, tour, record, tour, tour. |
