With their most recent release Animal Lover, The Residents again have provided their fans what they desire most - something they can't find on commercial radio and now satellite stations. Animal Lover isn't going to change this. However, fans that have long been following the releases of this disguised foursome will be more than pleased. The Residents have somewhat departed from their storyline of inspired collections from the last decade and have returned instead to their earlier rhythm inspired themes found on Eskimo and Duck Stab.
For those not familiar The Residents, Animal Lover boasts rhythm tracks based entirely on animal noise mating patterns. Included among these are cicadas, frogs, whales and humans. The CD cover quickly assures us that they were not mating with each other however.
I have little doubt that the fanatics who have religiously purchased each Residents release and re-release over the last 30 years will be tantalized and pleased with this new work. This is not the album that will win over the uninitiated. Then again I have first hand knowledge that The Residents don't want the throngs of commercial radio's fans clamoring at their eyeball helmets. Remember this is a group that prides itself on its anonymity.
