Methodically putting in their time through touring and independent releases, New York City's Calla is sure to gain a larger audience with their new full-length disc Collisions.

The trio rose from plodding through their paths since around 1997 and have it has finally paid off, despite their age no doubt tarnishing any dreams of being the next pop sensation. Probably not what they wanted to be, anyway.

Relentless practice, touring, and a silent communication between the three members pays off for them in Collisions , a collection of hushed vocals over restrained guitars. It feels such that, at any moment, they could just break free from their self imposed harness, but don't. Thus building that tension in each track that encourages the listener to delve deeper into the song's meanings among the drum loops.

Speaking of which, the drums are fantastic on this album, both on their own and complimenting the vocals of Aurelio Valle. The subtle cymbal beginning "This Better Go As Planned" sets the tone for the rest of the song, and the driving beat on the alarm clock rocker "Swagger" shows the band can let loose if it weren't for themselves.

The choice cut on the album is "Stumble," whereas "So Far, So What" could conveniently be confused with an Arcade Fire song (without the whimpering, of course). Valle's restrained vocals are the glue that binds the disc together, pensive and contemptful. There is an aura of familiarity with his voice, but it's hard to pinpoint exactly who he's drawing inspiration from, which tends to be the best trait of the best bands.

"It Dawned on Me" sounds like a more recent Coldplay song, and throughout Collisions you can hear that U2/Coldplay vibe in the subdued solos and fills of the guitarist. That minimal atmospheric tone that has made countless bands famous over the years. But they are nowhere near being a stadium band. Calla is right there in front of you, encouraging your anxiety with the slow, monotonous build up of songs like "Overshadowed" to a crescendo of rejoice to know that you can't believe your own ears.
