I don't know if any of you have watched a surf video, but they are quite boring. In fact, if you watch a surf video with a hardcore surfer, it can often be a very annoying experience. I had the pleasure of watching many surf videos during my four years of school in Los Angeles, more often than not in the presence of a one of these types.

"Yo dude...check this out this wave only forms like once a year for like five minutes total and there are all kinds of rocks and gnarly stuff below it and woooaaaah look at carve man!"

Despite my bias towards surf videos (I'm more of a skateboarder), I have much respect for the sport. Paddling out against even the weakest waves is something that I more or less cannot do. I've tried, with limited success. Usually I drag my board by the leash and swim out while trying not to swallow the toxic LA water. Standing up on the board and riding into shore is always an endeavor, which has lead to me developing my own sect of the sport known to exclusive circles as "ass surfing."

If I were to have my own "ass surfing" video, I think a natural selection for music would be Mapping an Invisible World by the Pennsylvania-bred, Southern California-relocated Days Away. When I hear this crafted, not-too-hard but not-too-soft melodic rock I can't help but imagine Kelly Slater (a world-renowned surfer) ripping up a crystal wave in slow motion while simultaneously tanning under the Hawaiian Sun during the dreamy song "Stay the Same."

For my "ass surfing" video, I would have he lead off track "God and Mars" as my pumping So-Cal rock anthem while I effortlessly glided towards the shore while riding a surfboard on my ass. No carving would be necessary (or possible). Just a streamline shot towards the nuclear plant-ridden Los Angeles coast.

After my heroic "ass surfing" segment, my video would naturally cut to a scene with me surrounded by bros and surf babes. The ideal song for this section would of course be the happy and upbeat track "Ideas." With our boards jammed in the sand, my fellow "ass surfers" and I would be chilling around a bonfire with brews in hand and good times plentiful to see. Ah...that would be the life.

If you want another helping of something that has been done many times before, but with different ingredients and served on a new platter, than grab this album, wax up your board, and go do some ass surfing.
