I have a confession to make: I don't watch "that show." I've caught a few glimpses every so often, but am not a fan. I've never watched a full episode (no desire to, either). I've never watched half an episode. I don't find the episodes where they show the "ones they threw back" funny in the slightest. I find it excruciating to watch and listen to any of it. That said I was interested in reviewing Bo Bice's release. I knew of him because of the show. I knew he was more of a rocker as opposed to a tune-belter. I had enough of those in the 80's. I had an inkling of what to expect from The Real Thing, but was surprised. Pleasantly. I guess I should start my review, huh?

Bo Bice's soulful voice brings a little rock n' roll to this pack of love songs. These are not sickening, sugary love songs; "Love Anthems" are a more apt description. Here you have a well crafted album full of balanced tracks that make for an enjoyable listen. I can crank this one up while I'm doing household stuff. I love an album where I can do that. While the tracks are nearly all at the same energy level, each one has its own identity.

Okay, not every single song on here is a love song in the traditional sense. It's not all "I love you, baby." If that were the case, I'd be in the bathroom staring into the toilet. This is love from a guy's point of view. Okay, a little more sensitive than the trucker type of guy, but not Mr-Sensitive-Artist-Who's-Probably-Flaming, either. I'm of the female persuasion, but I'm not into the lovey-dovey syrupy crap. I like this album because it's not that. He's not trying to be something he's not. I think all of the singers from AI who gain a contract are required to sing some sort of anthem about gaining success. The only difference is that Bice's is actually one I can not only tolerate, but like and listen to.

I look forward to hearing more from Bo Bice. A lot more.
