The Lashes' debut album is entitled Get It, which seems strange, because
we've all gotten it already - take simple, catchy lyrics, set them to power pop
music driven by hip-thrusting punk-rock rhythms. Sit back, watch your record
sail to the top of the charts, its singles blasted all over the radio ala The
Killers.
"Haven't I already heard this album?" may be the question asked first, but then comes some serious head nodding, knee bouncing and steering-wheel banging. The Lashes may be derivative, but when frontman Ben Clark woos us on the first track, "New Best Friend," with the lyric "do you want to be my new best friend tonight/And the rest of our lives," it's hard to really care. The answer, Ben, is yes - we love you and we love your infectious pop rock. Keep it comin'.
The album is a swift 35 minutes of sweet melodies and cute choruses on songs
with such unmemorable titles as "Daddy's Little Girl," "A Pretty Girl is Like
a Melody" and "The World Needs More Love Letters." In spite of its
unoriginality, Get It is still a good album - it's a fine example of
well-produced Pop-Rock. The songs fly by, the next one sounding exactly like
the one that preceded it. There's a happiness experienced, though fleeting,
and you'll want more as soon as it's done. All that is required is a simple
hit of the "Play" button.
