The word "raga" is a traditional type of music in Hindu culture complete with rhythmic patterns and melodic formulas. Peter Walker and company (see James Blackshaw, Thurston Moore, Steffen Basho-Junghans and more) truly express the beauty that is easily simplified into acoustic music. A Raga For Peter Walker is only the third album in 37 years for the artist. Walker's debut album in 1967, Rainy Day Raga, was a blend of Eastern and Western musical traditions. This is a signature and uncommon sound that he has not strayed from as his current album proves those traditions to be the base of every track.
It is difficult to reveal emotions when there are no words for a listener to take in, but this is not a problem for Walker and his fellow musicians. Words are trivial for this majestic arrangement of work loaded with instruments such as sitars, flamenco guitars, sarods, and the lush whispers of waterfalls and winds. This genre, especially coupled with Indian instrumentation, is either uncommon or unheard of in mainstream music. There is nothing simple about the aptitude of the artists themselves. Music truly is art when A Raga For Peter Walker is the piece to engage.
