We Are Glitter
The remix album. One of those types of records that are almost impossible to review, so instead, I'll talk about scones. In order to make a really good scone, you need - (Ahem. This is not a cooking magazine! Get on with it! - Ed.) oh fine, whatever. You'll regret it when you really need to bake a scone. Goldfrapp won't be able to help you then! (We'll take the risk. - Ed.)
We Are Glitter is Goldfrapp's first collection of remixes, and contains different mixes of songs from their Supernature and Black Cherry albums, taken apart and put back together by people like The Flaming Lips and The Shortwave Set, as well as the usual suspects of DFA and Alan Braxe.
As you'd expect, some of the mixes work better than others; the aforementioned Shortwave Set take on "Satin Chic" and bend it to their own blend of kitchen-sink Victorian steampunk aesthetic with great results, and the Braxe take on "Number 1" is as good as you'd expect. Some, though, stray considerably into the realms of cliche, especially the "I Feel Love" aping of the "Fly Me Away" mix.
Ultimately, though, it's a remix album, which contains multiple versions of the same songs. If you have a desperate inclination to hear different takes of their hits, or want to add to the selection of dance tracks for a Christmas party, then go ahead and pick this up. For the rest of us, we'll be better off waiting for the next album. Now, if you'll excuse me, my oven is beeping...
