On their MySpace, Hella describes their sound in a unique way: "If crack was music, thrown into a blender with fruit." Weird, right? Well, their description strangely fits. It's not positive, it's not negative but it's imaginative and strange. It's a little choppy, a little spazzed out, and more than a little bit trippy.
Personally, it's not my thing. Everything's a little strange, scratchy, and sort of strange. I'm not a fan. If you're a big fan of the concept of the lead singer of The Strokes, Julian Casablanca, transported to Pantera or Black Sabbath, but really crappy, then you'll like Hella's There's No 666 In Outer Space. The album sounds like a a really bad mash-up.
"Anarchists Just Wanna Have Fun" is the best song on the album, but still only passable. The song that grabs your attention most is "Hand That Rocks The Cradle," a bizarre video game metal song, and the title track. However, nothing impresses.
Hella isn't the kind of band you need to know to be on the cutting edge of any music genre. So it's probably better to just let them disappear. Maybe, if we all team up and think hard enough, they'll go away. It's worth a try, right?
