In honor of the upcoming Banned Books Week, the ABFFE and ALA have launched a new Web site at www.bannedbooksweek.org. The Web site does not contain any explicit content of banned books; it is still in what the group calls its “soft launch mode.” The purpose of the site is to educate the public on the objective of Banned Books Week and of the necessity of the freedom of reading (and naturally of writing) in the United States.

The content of the site is still being decided upon and has not been officially included, but will probably display a list of the banned books featured in the week’s events, and, according to a representative of ALA, “increasing support for book stores and libraries that are mounting displays and supporting free speech events.” The site will officially launch in the first week of September.

Booksellers and librarians wishing to submit information to the Web site’s content are asked to do so at http://bannedbooksweek.org/signup/.
