For a game as large and deep as Call of Duty 4 : Modern Warfare, our friends at Brady Games had to crank out one mother of an Official Strategy Guide. Stretching far longer than most, weighing in at just over two hundred and seventy plus pages, this monster of an OSG does its best to give the players just what they want. Covering the Xbox 360, PC, and PS3 versions of the game is done fluidly and without gloating over advantages certain systems may or may not have over others *cough unlockable achievements cough*, and still manage to devote the great majority of its shiny, papermill scented interior to covering the vast multiplayer aspects of the title.

Split into sections like a logical and navigateable little novella, the Call of Duty Strategy Guide lists important items of interest. Enemy intel, detailed overview maps of its many maze-like corridors, an in-depth walkthrough of every single-player stage from prologue to the big G.O., even going so far as to list possible character builds and team tactics for multiplayer. This massive tag along carefully dissects anything you would want or need to know to improve your game. Nearly every step of the way is detailed in the strategy guide, so it’s only a matter of finding the spot you are having trouble with and consulting the pros. The writers from Brady Games also offer a large series of tips and tricks to help you hone your game and survive those ridiculous holdout and escort missions.

The strategy guide also goes through a host of unlockable bonuses that become available after one complete play through. These are broken up into Arcade Mode and Cheats. In Arcade Mode is an entirely new way to play through Call of Duty, giving the player a set time limit and number of lives he or she must compete to get the very best score possible by killing enemies and performing objectives. Even though Arcade Mode offers a new way to play, it completely changes the feel of the game. Large glowing game points fly through the air, and extra lives are awarded across the center of the screen. Another level of difficulty can be attempted called Full Challenge Mode. This tricky beast puts the player in Arcade Mode with no saving or quitting, and each level is on a strict time limit. The cheats listed near the end of the OSG range from ambient to silly to destructive. For instance the CoD Noir cheat allows the game to be played in grainy black and white, the Cluster Bomb cheat turns each frag grenade thrown into a small cluster of five grenades, and Bad Year turns all enemies you kill into an explosion of tires that rain down a few seconds later.

Yes, for all the good and bad a Strategy Guide can bring like helpful hints and skill lacking cheats respectively, Brady Games has done a right decent job putting together all the most important issues of “Insert title here” the Official Strategy Guide. Although fairly generic in coverage this particular strategy guide outlines everything from the most basic procedures to suggested sniping tips for each multiplayer level. Details, maps, and every matter of gaming info can be found in Call of Duty 4’s OSG. The only thing upsetting about the book was that I couldn’t find the word “PROTIP” anywhere.
